@Demetra - I tend to agree with you. I hate to oversimplify - but in terms of economics it is simple supply and demand not matching each other. I think it boils down to the fact that being a performer for a living is a highly desirable career, there are so many people who want to throw their hat in the ring, and many will perform for free, just to be seen and heard. This means there is a huge supply of performers, and while I think demand is also high, I don't think the price demanders are willing to pay is quite so high, precisely because of the available supply. You also mention the real problem of piracy contributing to the low costs of obtaining music and lowering revenues.

I think this is the main problem in artistic careers - since there is so much competition and ways to get music recorded or live cheaply or for free (legally and illegally) it is just tough to make a living out of it.

From my basic knowledge of the current state of the music industry, most artist earn the majority of their income from live performances. There appears to be no debate about the lucrativeness of live shows. The problem in the music industry is the inability of the artist and record company to control distribution channels. Technological innovation has allowed music artist to expand their marketing and promoting mediums, but it has increased the risk of piracy. So yes we are dealing with a trade-off.

In my opinion artist should focus on, of course, creating music, selling merchandise, and live shows. Also perhaps more artist should look into independent record labels to solely handle distribution (for a reasonable percentage or flat rate) and create an in house company to handle promotions, booking, management, etc.

But I'm just brainstorming without any knowledge of the economics of the music industry :-).
